Book Club to Discuss The Bell

River Forest, IL – Dominican University’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, September 19, to discuss Iris Murdoch’s The Bell. The book club meets at 7:00 p.m. in Lewis Lounge on the first floor of Lewis Hall on the main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Set in the 1940s in a small English hamlet near an Abbey of sequestered nuns, The Bell explores the relationships of a group of people who have established a lay community in the ancestral home of Michael Meade. The community includes several characters "whose desire for God makes them unsatisfactory citizens of an ordinary life, but whose strength or temperament fails them to surrender the world completely." The force and tension of repressed contemplation grows until it is released by a series of stunning events.

Murdoch was a renowned English writer and philosopher who was made a Dame Commander in the Order of the British Empire in 1987. The Bell was published in 1958, and is one of her best-known works.
