U.S. News: Dominican "Great School at Great Price"
River Forest, IL - Dominican University is one of only two master’s level universities in the State of Illinois to be considered a “Great School at a Great Price” in US News & World Report’s prestigious annual publication, “America’s Best Colleges.” Within the category of master’s level universities, only Bradley University and Dominican University were rated as “great schools at great prices” in the 2008 edition of the national publication.
Dominican University was included with Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and Loyola University Chicago (national universities category) as Illinois institutions of higher education providing the best value for students. US News & World Report relates a school’s academic quality to the net cost of attending the school to determine its ranking in the “Great Schools at Great Prices” category.
In addition, Dominican is again ranked by the publication in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities. Dominican is one of only four Illinois institutions to rank in the top 25 master’s level universities. This is the tenth year in a row that Dominican University has been included in the top tier among Midwest master’s level universities.
US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” is an annual examination of 1,400 accredited four-year American colleges and universities. The rankings, based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, supply hard data and analysis to help college applicants compare schools across the country.
Other area master’s level universities (institutions providing a full range of undergraduate and master’s level programs) listed in the top tier include Bradley University (6), Elmhurst College (13), North Central College (19), Benedictine University and St. Xavier University (tied at 37), University of St. Francis (40), North Park University (52), and Lewis University (56). Aurora University and Concordia University Chicago were ranked in the third tier.
US News & World Report explains that its rankings are based on a nonpartisan view of what matters most in a college education. Specifically, the report measures several different categories to determine an institution’s rank, including assessment by administrators at peer institutions, student retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving rate.
In addition to the US News & World Report’s annual examination, Colleges of Distinction, an online college guide, has included Dominican University in its listing of selected national colleges that have engaged students, great teaching, a vibrant community and successful outcomes. Dominican is also recognized as a competitive college by Peterson’s Guide and highly ranked in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs through the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
