DU Graduate Library Professor Receives IMLS Grant
River Forest, IL - Dominican University Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) Assistant Professor Kate Williams, a resident of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood, has been awarded a $199,276 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Early Career Development program for a project entitled “Chicago Community Informatics: Places, Uses, Resources.”
The grant will be used to investigate how Chicagoans in various neighborhoods access and use information technology. Williams will research how residents of specific Chicago neighborhoods access the Internet, how they use online information and what resources they use when they need help with accessing information.
Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago, and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan. She joined the Dominican University GSLIS faculty in spring 2006. She was selected as the winner of this year’s Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Competition by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE).
The IMLS Early Career Development program supports the early career development of new faculty members who are likely to become leaders in library and information science. It provides funding to support innovative research by untenured, tenure-track faculty in graduate schools of library and information science.
Accredited by the ALA, Dominican University’s GSLIS has been educating future library leaders and information professionals since the 1930s. The school offers master’s degrees in library and information science and in knowledge management.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In the 2007 issue of America’s Best Colleges , U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the ninth consecutive year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
