GSLIS announces staff appointments

River Forest, IL – Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) announces the following staff appointments and achievements:

Susan Roman, dean, was recently elected to the American Library Association (ALA) Council, the policy-making body of the ALA.

Associate Professor Kate Marek, the recipient of several Dominican University teaching awards, has been awarded full tenure. Marek has a master’s degree in library science from Dominican University and a doctoral degree from Emporia State University School of Library and Information Management.

Edward J. Valauskas, who served as the university’s Follett Chair since 2004, has accepted a position as full-time instructor. He has been an adjunct instructor at the university since 1995. Valauskas is the curator of rare books at the library of the Chicago Botanic Garden and chief editor, founder and co-publisher with Esther Dyson and Rishab Ghosh of First Monday, an online peer-reviewed journal about Internet culture. He is also the founder and principal of Internet Mechanics, a technology consulting group that provides advice and support on Internet tools and electronic mail to corporations, libraries and nonprofit organizations.

Diane Velasquez has been appointed assistant professor. She has a master’s degree in library information science from the University of Arizona’s School of Information Resources and Library Science and received a doctoral degree from the School of Information Science and Learning Technologies at the University of Missouri.

Accredited by the American Library Association, Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science has been educating future library leaders and information professionals since 1928.
