Mary Quinn receives Dominican Service Award
River Forest, IL – Mary Quinn, a resident of Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood and co-founder of the Blessed Sacrament Youth Center in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, recently received the Exemplary Service Award from Dominican University. The award was presented to Quinn during the university’s Caritas Recognition Reception in April.
Under Quinn’s direction, Blessed Sacrament Youth Center is now in its 20th year. The center provides services such as tutoring, job training programs, computer access and recreational activities to over 150 registered youth each year from the North Lawndale neighborhood. Quinn serves on Dominican University’s Service Learning Advisory Board and has encouraged and mentored many of the Dominican students who volunteer at the youth center.
Prior to her work with Blessed Sacrament Youth Center, Quinn served as an apostolic volunteer, assisting Sister Ginger Phillips, OP at Westside Employment Education Center in Chicago’s University Village neighborhood.
“Mary has done an exceptional job of educating our students about the needs of the Lawndale neighborhood and about a variety of social justice issues. Her mentoring of our students has been invaluable,” said MaDonna Thelen, Dominican University’s director of service learning.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs through the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education and the Graduate School of Social Work. In the 2007 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the ninth consecutive year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
