DU Lecture on Social Welfare in South Africa

River Forest, IL - Dominican University’s Graduate School of Social Work will present a lecture on the evolution of social welfare in South Africa by Dr. Ntombfikile Mazibuko, deputy vice-chancellor and head of the college of humanities at the University of Kwazaulu-Natal, South Africa, on Tuesday, April 10. The lecture will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street.

Dr. Mazibuko will focus on the social welfare system in post-apartheid South Africa. Given the racial imbalances and discrimination of the past, growing unemployment and poverty, and the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, the social welfare challenges for democratic South Africa have been immense. Key among these challenges is the extent to which welfare services cushion the negative impact of a restructuring economy in the global context.

Dr. Mazibuko received her bachelor’s degree in social work with honors from the University of Zululand and did post-graduate studies in the management of welfare agencies at Western Michigan University. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science and communications from the University of South Africa and a master’s degree in social science at the University of Natal. Her doctorate was earned at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is an active member of the Chicago-Durban Exchange Programme, a sister city program that develops and promotes intercity collaborations in Africa and the United States.

For more information on this lecture, please call Dominican University’s Graduate School of Social Work at (708) 714-9100.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
