DU Presents Deborah Voigt in Benefit Concert
River Forest , IL - Dominican University proudly presents Deborah Voigt, one of the world’s foremost operatic sopranos, in recital for the 27th Annual Trustee Benefit Concert on Sunday, April 22. Ms. Voigt will perform at 3:00 p.m. in the intimate confines of the university’s 1,200-seat Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The beloved Illinois-born Voigt enjoyed a highly acclaimed run as the lead in Richard Strauss’ Salome at the Lyric Opera of Chicago last fall, shortly after undergoing a major physical transformation following gastric bypass surgery. Her performance was included in the New York Times’ 10 most memorable classical music events of 2006.
She recently made her role debut as Helen of Troy in Richard Strauss’ Egyptian Helene at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera this month. According to a New York Times’ review, “she sent Strauss’ lines soaring with gleaming tone and unforced power. In one climactic moment, standing atop the prompter’s box, she capped a defiant outburst with a high C that, like some “Star Wars” light saber, threatened to slice the auditorium right down the middle.”
Her 2003 recording of Strauss’ Egyptian Helene was named one of the best CDs of 2003 by Opera News, which honored Voigt in February with a highly coveted Opera News Award. Voigt’s 2004 recording, Obsessions, which presents scenes and arias from operas by Wagner and Strauss, was a Billboard magazine top-five bestseller.
A devotee of Broadway and American song, Voigt recently debuted in Lincoln Center’s long-running “American Songbook” series, singing Broadway and popular standards. According to Variety, “Voigt crosses the opera-Broadway boundary with grace and elegance. She also possesses a devilish sense of humor.” Opera News raved, “she creates each musical mood so perfectly and demonstrates such show-biz savvy that it makes [one] wish she had more opportunities to perform this kind of material.”
For this exciting program of arias, art songs and popular standards at Dominican University, Voigt will be accompanied on piano by her frequent collaborator Brian Zeger in a benefit to support the university’s scholarship program. Composers featured in the program will include Leonard Bernstein, Mozart, Strauss and Verdi.
The concert is part of a festive day of fundraising events for the university. Guests will have an opportunity to meet Voigt at a cocktail reception and compete for more than 100 exciting items at a silent auction following the concert.
At a gala dinner in the evening, the university will bestow the 2007 Bravo Award to LaSalle Bank for its distinguished support of the fine arts, including the significant part that it has played in the theatre renaissance of the Chicago Loop. In partnership with Broadway in Chicago, LaSalle Bank recently completed a multi-million dollar restoration of the historic Majestic Theatre and returned the 1906 landmark to its former grandeur, under the new name of LaSalle Bank Theatre.
Norman R. Bobins, president, chairman and CEO of LaSalle Bank, will accept the award on the bank’s behalf. LaSalle Bank and Ernst & Young are Gold Corporate Sponsors of this gala benefit.
Tickets for the concert and a cocktail reception/ gala dinner and silent auction are $350. A limited number of concert-only tickets are available for $55 and $75 through the university’s box office at (708) 488-5000. For more information on the gala benefit, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (708) 524-6299.
