Dominican University Presents Latino Film Festival

Dominican University will again serve as a west suburban satellite site for the 23rd Annual Chicago Latino Film Festival by screening films on Tuesday evenings, April 17 and 24. The films will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the Eloise Martin Recital Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Buscando a Leti (In Search of Leti), directed by Dalia Tapia, is a family drama centering on the relationship between Leti, a 10-year-old girl, and the grandparents who are caring for her while her parents seek their fortune in America. While dealing with abusive treatment from her grandmother, she develops a loving bond with her grandfather—a bond that is threatened when her parents return. The director was born in Morelia, Mexico but was raised in Maywood and graduated from Proviso East High School. She is currently teaching for the Chicago Public School system and expects to receive her master’s degree in film and video from Columbia College this spring.

Shut Up and Do It, directed by Bruno Irizarry, details the trials of a young man attempting to create his own independent film after getting fed up with the depiction of Latinos in mainstream film and television. His dream soon becomes a nightmare as he is forced to deal with a rapidly dwindling budget and unreasonable actors’ egos. His comic and emotional journey leads him to believe that there might be more to life than making a movie.

The films will be preceded by a reception with Spanish tapas at 7:00 p.m. Both films will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles. General admission tickets are $10, which includes the reception. For more information on these films, please call (708) 524-6678.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In the 2007 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the ninth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
