SOE Offers Summer Literacy Clinic for Children
Dominican University’s School of Education is offering this summer a Language and Literacy Reading Clinic for children from kindergarten through sixth grade. The clinic will be held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, July 9 through July 27 at the university’s Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The clinic, which is limited to 26 applicants, is designed to enable children to maintain or improve their reading skills over the course of the summer. Each applicant will be tested prior to the beginning of the clinic to determine his/her reading level, and appropriate diagnostic strategies will be employed to address his/her unique needs. The clinic incorporates word recognition strategies, comprehension and fluency. Students will benefit from individualized instruction and small group work sessions.
Students in the clinic will be guided by teacher/candidates completing their practicum courses for a Master of Arts in Education Reading Specialist degree at Dominican University. These candidates will be supervised by university faculty who will serve as literacy coaches for the teacher/candidates.
The clinic is under the direction of Dr. Marilyn Ludolph, an assistant professor of education at Dominican University with over 35 years of experience as a public school teacher, principal and reading specialist; and Dr. Bonnie Burns, associate professor of education at Dominican University and the author of How to Teach Balanced Reading and Writing (2006).
Tuition for the clinic is $450. For more information, please contact Dr. Ludolph at (708) 524-6695 or Dr. Burns at (708) 524-6936.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
