Book Club to Discuss Ellen Foster
Dominican University’s Book Club will discuss Kaye Gibbons’ Ellen Foster on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Lewis Lounge. The lounge is located on the main campus, 7900 West Division Street, River Forest.
Set in the South of the 1970s, Ellen Foster is a coming-of-age story narrated by the heroic 11-year-old title character. After her mother commits suicide, Ellen is forced to escape her abusive, alcoholic father and his friends. She is moved from home to home, continually searching for a welcoming place where she will be loved. Each home, ranging from a hippie art teacher to an emotionally-abusive grandmother to an African-American family, provides an insight into American culture and the true meaning of family and belonging.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
