DU Presents Native American Dance Performance
River Forest , IL – Waswagoning, a renowned Native American dance theatre, will present two “ Spirit of the People” performances at Dominican University on Saturday, March 24. The performances will be held at noon and at 7:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The Waswagoning production depicts a journey through time, reflecting the past and present of Native American culture. Incorporating animal furs, Native American symbols and shields, dancers will perform against an authentic set with traditional background music and drumming. Each dance is explained to educate viewers about its meaning and significance to the Native American people.
Cultural exhibits will be on display 90 minutes prior to each performance and will include Native American crafts as well as items from Aurora University’s Schingoethe Museum and a 16-foot authentic birch bark canoe.
Conceived by Nick Hockings, a traditional pipe carrier, drum chief and cultural consultant for the Ojibwe, the performance is an extension of an authentic 17th century Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe village and outdoor museum that he recreated in northern Wisconsin to preserve the Ojibwe way of life.
This production is co-sponsored by Dominican University’s pastoral ministry program and Midwest SOARRING Foundation. Tickets for the matinee performance are $15 for adults and $7 for children under 12 years of age. Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. performance are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12 years of age. To order tickets, please call the Dominican University box office at (708) 524-6942 or purchase online at www.midwestsoarring.org.
