Men’s volleyball to remain club offering
The Dominican University Department of Athletics and Recreation announced on Friday that its men’s club volleyball team will remain a club-level offering for the 2007-2008 season and will not be elevated to NCAA Division III varsity status.“The landscape of NCAA Division III men’s volleyball, most importantly Division III men’s volleyball in the Midwest, has changed drastically over the last year,” explained Erick Baumann, director of athletics and recreation at Dominican University.
Baumann went on to explain that scheduling matches versus similar competition would be a huge challenge. The NCAA Division III minimum contest requirement for men’s volleyball will increase from eight matches to 17 matches in August of 2007. Also, at the present time, there are only three institutions in the Midwest that sponsor NCAA Division III men’s varsity volleyball.
“These are just some of the factors that led to the decision we have come to,” said Baumann. “ This is for the best of the program as well as the entire department and we will keep a close eye on volleyball in the Midwest over the next year and then reevaluate the situation.”
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
