Asst. Dean of DU Library School Opens ALA Meeting

Tracie D. Hall, assistant dean of Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science, served as the keynote speaker at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sunrise celebration during the American Library Association’s (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, WA. Hall delivered her keynote speech titled “The Parable of the Talents Retold: Librarians as Active Witnesses to History” on Monday, January 22.

Sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Task Force of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), the association’s seventh annual sunrise celebration honored the work and life of Dr. King. Participants included representatives of associations of librarians of color and several ALA committees, round tables and assemblies.

Formerly director of the ALA Office of Diversity, Hall has served in various capacities at Hartford, New Haven Free, and Seattle public libraries, and has taught at the schools of library and information science at Catholic University of America and Dominican University. Recognized by Library Journal as the August 2004 “Mover and Shaker,” Hall’s writings on diversity and leadership have appeared in several professional publications. Principal and founder of the Goodseed Consulting Group, Hall has provided training and facilitation for libraries across the country.

Accredited by the ALA, Dominican University’s GSLIS has been educating future library leaders and information professionals since the 1930s. The school offers master’s degrees in library and information science and in knowledge management.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In the 2007 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the ninth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
