Men’s basketball plays in overtime contest
The Dominican University men’s basketball team played in its fourth straight overtime contest on Saturday, this time falling to Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) front-runner Aurora University 83-80.
Dominican’s Jose Garcia (Kenosha, WI) put the Stars ahead 68-65 with just over a minute remaining as the nation’s 13th ranked three-point shooter connected on his only three-point field goal of the game. After the Spartans sank a pair of free throws, Garcia pushed the Stars’ lead back to three points with only 38 seconds remaining on a driving lay-up. The Spartans then tied the game at 70-70 on a three-pointer with just 20 seconds remaining.
Dominican opened the overtime period on a 4-0 run, but Aurora answered with a 5-0 run of its own to claim the lead at 75-74. The two teams battled back and forth with the Spartans sealing the game at the foul line, converting on six of seven free throws in the game’s final 1:15 minutes.
Dominican’s Mike Haiduc (Chicago, IL) paced the Star’s offense with 29 points on 13-for-20 shooting from the field. The 6’7” junior also tallied six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal in 36 minutes before fouling out with 1:16 minutes remaining in the overtime period.
Senior Erin McMillan (Chicago, IL) added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Stars in the losing effort. The 6’7” forward shot 5-for-10 from the field and grabbed ten defensive rebounds in 29 minutes.
The loss dropped Dominican University to 13-9 overall, 9-6 in the NAC and 2-4 in overtime games this season. They will return to the court on Tuesday, as they travel to neighborhood rival Concordia University Chicago for a 7:00 p.m. game. The Stars will then host Rockford College on Thursday before traveling to Mequon, WI to take on Concordia University (WI) in the Stars’ final regular season game of the year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
