Men’s basketball advances to NAC semifinals

The Dominican University men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the inaugural Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) Men’s Basketball Tournament with a 60-43 win over visiting Benedictine University on Tuesday night. The game marked the first time Dominican University hosted a conference tournament game, as well as the Stars’ first win in a conference tournament game, since joining the NCAA Division III in 2000.

The Stars only trailed once throughout the entire game and that was at 4-2 just moments into the game. Dominican then gained the lead at 6-4 with 15:18 remaining in the first half and never looked back, leading by as many as 19 points during the waning moments of the game.

Dominican’s Mike Haiduc led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, pushing his career scoring total to 999 points in 76 games throughout his three-year career. Haiduc was 9-for-15 from the field and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds with two steals and one block.

Junior transfers Rashim Lettsome and Jose Garcia chipped in 12 points and 11 points respectively for the Stars in the winning effort. Lettsome went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the second half to help preserve the victory while Garcia, one the nation’s top three-point shooters, went 4-for-9 from the field and 2-for-6 from three.

Dominican will now travel to Madison, WI to take on Edgewood College, the two-seed in the NAC Tournament, on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Stars split the season series with Edgewood, winning a 61-59 thriller at home but falling on the road 77-76 in overtime. The winner of the Dominican/Edgewood match-up will face the winner of a match-up between Aurora University and Lakeland College on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. with the site still to be determined.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
