DU Presents Panel Discussion on Global Warming

Coming on the heels of An Inconvenient Truth’s Academy Award for best documentary feature of the year, Dominican University will present a panel discussion titled “Acting on the Truth: How You Can Help Re-Set the Global Thermostat and Save the Planet” on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m.. A 60-minute interactive presentation featuring highlights from Al Gore’s documentary will be shown prior to the discussion in the auditorium of the university’s Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest.

The panel will be led by Dr. James Sweitzer, an astronomer/astrophysicist who has trained with Al Gore to present portions of An Inconvenient Truth. The panel will also include Dominican University representatives Dr. Carol Tallarico, assistant professor of economics, and Father Richard Woods, professor of theology. Dr. Tallarico will address the economic repercussions of climate change and Fr. Woods will discuss the moral imperatives of ecological stewardship.

Dr. Sweitzer is the former assistant director of The Adler Planetarium and former director of special projects for the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He helped create the Center for Astronomical Research in Antarctica, a program of the University of Chicago, and made two trips to the South Pole, where he facilitated the first live broadcast from the Pole. He is the former director of DePaul University’s Space Science Center, acting as a liaison between NASA’s Space Science missions and a seven-state Midwestern region. In 2004, he launched Science Communications Consultants, dedicated to making science accessible and exciting to all.

A question and answer period will follow the panel discussion. For more information about this free program, please contact Dr. John Tandarich at Dominican University at (708) 524-6865.
