Kate Williams Wins ALISE Dissertation Award
Kate Williams, assistant professor in Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science, has been selected as the winner of this year’s Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Competition by the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE).
Williams’ dissertation, “Social Networks, Social Capital and the Use of Information and Communications Technology in Socially Excluded Communities: A Study of Community Groups in Manchester, England,” was completed last year at the University of Michigan.
Williams will receive a certificate and a check for $500 during the ALISE Annual Conference to be held January 15 through January 18 in Seattle, WA. During the conference, she will also give an overview of her research for the awards panel.
Accredited by the American Library Association, Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science has been educating future library leaders and information professionals since the 1930s.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In the 2007 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the ninth consecutive year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
