DUPAC Presents Othello

Dominican University Performing Arts Center will present the Shakespearean drama Othello the weekend of Friday, February 23 through Sunday, February 25 in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. Before the Sunday performance, at 2:00 p.m., renowned Shakespeare scholar David Bevington, the 2007 holder of Dominican University’s Lund-Gill Chair, will present a lecture on the play, widely considered to be one of Shakespeare’s most profound tragedies.

David Bevington is professor emeritus in the humanities, English language and literature, and comparative literature at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 1967. A world-renowned specialist in British drama of the Renaissance, Bevington has published studies of Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and the Stuart Court Masque. He edited and introduced the complete works of Shakespeare in the 29-volume Bantam Classics paperback editions and the single-volume Longman edition. He is the recipient of several distinguished honors and awards, including the Phi Beta Kappa Book Prize, University of Virginia; the Quantrell Teaching Award, University of Chicago; and two Guggenheim Fellowships. He is teaching a senior honors seminar at the Dominican University this semester.

In Shakespeare’s complex interpretation of jealousy and passion, Othello, a Moor who commands the Venetian army against the Turks, elopes with his beloved Desdemona. Passed over for military promotion, the cunning and sinister Iago orchestrates Othello’s and Desdemona’s downfall by spinning a web of lies and leading Othello to question his wife’s fidelity.

Considered by many critics to be the apex of dramatic art, Othello’s chilling examination of betrayal, ambition and race still resonates with contemporary audiences 400 years after it was written.

Friday and Saturday night performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday performance begins at 3:00 p.m. For more information or to order tickets, contact the Dominican University box office at (708) 488-5000 or purchase tickets online at www.dom.edu/pac. General admission tickets are $15.
