Book Club to Discuss Louise Erdrich Novel
The Dominican University Book Club will meet on Thursday, February 22 to discuss Louise Erdrich’s novel The Master Butcher’s Singing Club. The club meets at 7:00 p.m. in the lounge of Lewis Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The Master Butcher’s Singing Club follows trained sniper Fidelis Waldvogel as he returns to his quiet German village after World War I to marry the pregnant wife of his best friend. With his wife in tow, he packs up his father’s butcher knives and sets sail for America, where he starts a new life as the owner of a butcher shop in Argus, ND. His life is irrevocably changed after he meets Delphine Wazka, who, with her husband, runs a local vaudeville show.
Bordering on magic realism, the novel introduces a world of rich imagery and memorable characters while depicting the dissolution of small-town America.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
