DU To Hold Commencement Exercises on January 6
Dominican University will hold commencement exercises for undergraduate and graduate students on Saturday, January 6 at 1:00 p.m. in Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. Barbara Whitney Carr, president and CEO of the Chicago Botanic Gardens, will serve as speaker for the commencement ceremony and Thomas M. Owens, founder of the Chicago-based Cara Program, will receive an honorary degree.
During her 12-year tenure with the Chicago Botanic Garden, Barbara Whitney Carr has overseen the unparalleled growth of one of Chicago’s most popular oases and one of the most highly regarded public gardens in the country. After joining the Garden in 1994, she developed a 10-year master plan and launched a $100 million capital campaign that eventually succeeded in surpassing its goal by $48 million.
In 2004, the Garden received the National Award for Museum and Library Service for its educational and collaborative community projects. Earlier this year, the American Public Garden Association named the Chicago Botanic Garden the “Garden of the Year” for best horticulture practices and overall aesthetic.
Prior to her tenure with the Garden, Barbara enjoyed an esteemed 19-year career at the Lincoln Park Zoological Society, where she served as president and executive director from 1975 to 1994.
Tom Owens founded the Cara Program in 1991 to provide comprehensive job training, life skills classes, substance abuse counseling, housing referrals and employment opportunities for Chicago’s homeless and at-risk populations. Owens also is co-chairman of the Emergency Fund, a nonprofit organization providing financial assistance to Chicago residents in crisis. In addition, through his Owens Foundation, he provides grants to organizations involved in homelessness prevention as well as high school scholarships for financially disadvantaged youth.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In the 2007 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the ninth consecutive year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
