Men’s soccer advances to Sweet Sixteen

With back-to-back shutout victories in the first and second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships, Dominican University will travel to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH to take on Montclair State University at 1:30 p.m. in the Sweet 16.

On Saturday, the Stars stomped Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) foe Aurora University 6-0 in the opening round of the National Tournament. Freshman midfielder Juan Saldana (O’Fallon, MO) started the Stars’ scoring party in just the fourth minute of play with a header to the far post off a cross from junior defender Seth Fallik (Overland Park, KS). Before the final horn sounded, six different Dominican players had scored a goal and nine players tallied at least one point, led by sophomore standout Matt Kochanowski’s (Arlington Heights, IL) goal and two assists.

The win pushed the Stars into the second round where they faced St. Norbert College. Despite being out-shot for just the second time all season, the Stars emerged with a 2-0 win over the Green Knights. The Stars’ Plamen Pamukov (Addison, IL) and Arnes Rodriguez (Rosemont, IL) scored the Stars’ goals just 28 seconds apart to completely deflate the Green Knights who had advanced to the second round on a 4-3 shootout victory over the University of Chicago after the two teams played to a scoreless tie for 110 minutes.

The Stars’ win over St. Norbert was the team’s 20th win of the season (20-1-1) and the 200th career coaching victory for Head Coach Erick Baumann (200-52-13) in just his 12th season with Dominican University.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
