Dominican sweeps NAC men’s soccer awards
The Dominican University men’s soccer team, in the midst of a 20-1-1 season, swept the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) men’s soccer Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year Awards after winning the conference regular season and NAC tournament with a perfect 9-0-0 record during regular season play.
Dominican’s Erick Baumann (Addison, IL), who won his 200th career game with a 2-0 win over St. Norbert College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships on Sunday, won his eighth Coach of the Year Award. Baumann’s Stars are making their sixth national tournament appearance, including their fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. In just 12 seasons as the Stars’ head coach, Baumann has racked up a 200-52-13 overall record with ten conference championships.
Freshman midfielder Arnes Rodriguez (Rosemont, Ill.) and sophomore forward Matt Kochanowski (Arlington Heights, IL) were named the NAC Rookie of the Year and NAC Player of the Year respectively. Rodriguez ranks tops in the nation in assists per game at 0.83 (4th) and points per game at 2.28 (18th). In conference-only games he was first in assists per game (1.12) and second in points per game (2.88) while ranking fifth in goals per game (0.88).
Kochanowski, the 2005 Lake Michigan Conference Rookie of the Year, led the NAC in both points (3.67) and goals (1.56) per conference game, and was fifth in assists (0.56/game). His 2.5 points per game in all games ranks ninth best in the nation, and his 1.0 goals per game ranks 13th.
Junior defender Elvin Perez (Chicago, IL), sophomore defender Rigoberto Barajas (Cicero, IL) and sophomore midfielder Plamen Pamukov (Addison, IL) represented Dominican University on the All-Conference Team along with Kochanowski and Rodriguez while sophomore goalkeeper Piotr Sliwa (Chicago, IL) received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.
Perez, a 2005 NSCAA All-Region 2nd Team selection, Barajas and Sliwa anchor the nation’s ninth best defense, posting a 0.44 goals against average with a 0.60 shutout percentage while Pamukov, a 2005 NSCAA All-Region 1st Team selection, is the Stars’ third leading scorer with 15 goals and 11 assists in 22 games to date.
Rodriguez, forward Nico Toro (Chesterfield, MO), midfielder Juan Saldana (O’Fallon, MO) and midfielder Stan Micic (Mt. Prospect, IL) capped off the Stars’ postseason awards with spots on the NAC All-Rookie Team.
