Men’s soccer falls in NCAA Elite Eight

The Dominican University men’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight with a 4-2 shootout victory over the Montclair State University Redhawks after playing to a 1-1 tie through double-overtime. The Stars then fell 2-0 to the Ohio Wesleyan Bishops, bringing their season to a close.

On Saturday afternoon, Montclair State took a 1-0 lead on a restart goal just outside the top of the box in the 24th minute. It was just the second time all season the Stars had fallen behind, but the Stars kept pressing, finally knotting the game at 1-1 in the 83rd minute on a goal by sophomore Rigoberto Barajas (Cicero, IL).

The Stars continued to pressure the Redhawks but could not notch the game-winning goal through two overtimes. In the shootout, the Stars scored on all four penalty attempts, including freshman Juan Saldana (O’Fallon, MO) who tallied the game-winner after goalkeeper Piotr Sliwa (Chicago, IL) saved two Montclair attempts in the first four shooters.

“That was probably the most proud I have been of our team all season,” said Erick Baumann, the Stars’ head coach. “It was just the second time we had fallen behind all season but our guys never gave up. We left everything we had in us on the field and kept pressing even after we had finally scored the tying goal with just minutes to play.”

The magic then ran dry for the Stars, as they again found themselves trailing after Ohio Wesleyan tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 19th minute, off a set play after restart in front of the Stars’ bench. However, this time the Stars couldn’t crack the Bishops’ defense and eventually allowed an insurance goal in the 75th minute.

It was just the second time the Stars appeared in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Elite Eight since becoming eligible for NCAA post-season in 2002.

The Stars finished the season with an overall record of 20-2-2, winning the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) with a perfect 9-0-0 record and winning the NAC Tournament title.
