DU presents Ronald Takaki in Mazzuchelli Lecture
Dominican University’s Siena Center will present Ronald Takaki, author of the critically acclaimed book A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America, in the annual Mazzuchelli Lecture on Wednesday, November 15. Takaki will deliver a lecture titled “America in a Different Mirror” at 5:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.Takaki’s lecture will offer a comparative approach to the study of the history of America’s diversity in light of recent debates on immigration and diversity in America. He will address questions about who is an “American” and what “America” stands for.
Takaki, the grandson of Japanese plantation laborers in Hawaii, received his doctoral degree in American history from the University of California-Berkley. After graduation, he was hired to teach a course on Black history at UCLA, the first such course in the history of the school. He later returned to Berkeley, where he currently serves as professor emeritus.
A well-respected international speaker, Takaki was invited in 1987 to present a paper in Armenia comparing race and ethnicity in the U.S. and U.S.S.R. In 1990, the Soviet Academy of Sciences invited him to Moscow to give a paper on the impact of the Cold War on racial and ethnic conflicts.
This lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Siena Center at (708) 714-9105 or visit the website at www.siena.dom.edu.
