Dominican Book Club Discusses Old School
Dominican University’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, September 28 to discuss Old School by Tobias Wolff. The book club meets at 7:00 p.m. in the Lewis Lounge on the first floor of Lewis Hall on the main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
Set in the peaceful period of the early 1960s, Old School centers around a young man who is struggling to fit in with his peers at an elite New England prep school. At this school, literature is the center of the curriculum. The students become obsessed with a series of literary competitions in which the winners are given a private audience with a visiting writer. Throughout the novel, the young man struggles with his writing skills and with his identity at the school.
In Old School, a Pen/Faulkner Award Finalist, Wolff offers his comment on the art of writing and the balance between a writer’s public façade and true identity. Wolff is also an acclaimed short story writer and the author of the memoir This Boy’s Life.
