Baseball Climbs Above .500

The Dominican University baseball team has been fighting an uphill battle since beginning the season 0-7 on its spring trip to Fort Myers, FL. However, after winning 11 out of their last 14 games, the Stars have finally broken the .500 plateau with an overall record of 11-10.

Last week, the Stars swept a doubleheader from Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) foe Lakeland College to improve their record to 5-1 in the conference and now sit just one-half game behind Edgewood College, which they play in a three-game series this weekend.

The Stars sent junior right-hander Bret Dvorak (Elmwood Park, IL) to the mound in game one against Lakeland. Dvorak scattered three hits and one walk while allowing just one run and picked up the win in a complete-game, seven-inning performance.

Dvorak improved to 4-1 on the year with a team-best 0.64 ERA in over 42 innings of work. He has a strikeout-to-walk ratio better than 2.5:1 with 42 strikeouts and just 16 base-on balls.

The Stars sent sophomore Mike Eifel (Midlothian, IL) to the hill in game two. Eifel exited the game with one out in the fifth inning with a 5-3 lead that the bullpen preserved. Freshman George Hickey (Chicago, IL) came into the game in the fifth and went 3.2 innings to pick up his first collegiate victory.

Offensively, Rich Sullivan (Chicago, IL) picked up three hits on the day and drove in two runs to improve his team-best batting average to .409 and increase his team-leading RBI total to 19.

The Stars will prepare for the LMC series with Edgewood on Thursday and Saturday with a single game against Eureka College on Wednesday at home at 3:00 p.m. The Stars will then travel to Edgewood on Thursday for a 3:00 p.m. game before hosting the Eagles for a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
