Baseball Endures Three-game Skid

Just days after knocking off the Edgewood College Eagles and claiming the top spot in the Lake Michigan Conference (LMC), the Dominican University Stars find themselves on their first three-game losing streak since beginning the season 0-7 and again trailing the Eagles for first place in the LMC.

Last Thursday, the Stars completed a five-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory over Edgewood. The Stars’ Brett Dvorak (Elmwood Park, IL) picked up his team-leading fifth victory of the season with a masterful eight-inning performance during which he scattered 10 hits and four walks and allowed just one earned-run.

The Stars then turned the game over to the bullpen and Brian Herman (Chicago, IL) picked up his first save of the season as he and Zach Schrader (Plainfield, IL) combined for a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the Stars’ victory.

On Friday, the Stars began a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 loss at Lakeland College. With the score tied at 1-1 in the fourth inning, Lakeland College scraped up four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 5-1 lead that the Stars could not overcome.

The Stars then followed that with a doubleheader loss against Edgewood College at home on Saturday. With the Stars ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh, the bullpen surrendered a six-run seventh as the Eagles walked away with a 9-4 win. Sophomore Mike Eifel (Midlothian, IL) was in line for the win after allowing just one earned-run on three hits through the game’s first five innings.

The Stars then surrendered six runs in the second inning of the second game en route to an 8-3 loss that dropped the team to 8-4 in LMC play and 14-13 overall. The Stars return to conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Concordia University (WI).
