Men’s Volleyball Wins National Championship
The Dominican University men’s club volleyball team won its second consecutive National Intramural and Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA) Division II national championship on Saturday, April 15 in Salt Lake City, UT.
The Stars advanced all the way through the three-day tournament and did not drop a single game of any match. On Thursday, Dominican University cruised through Round 1 Pool Play with wins over Winona State (25-15, 25-22), University of New Hampshire (25-8, 25-13) and Appalachian State (25-24, 25-11).
The Stars continued their outstanding play on Friday in Round 2 Pool Play with wins over Olivet Nazarene University (25-17, 25-15) and Fairfield University (25-22, 25-22) before advancing to Saturday’s single elimination round.
On Saturday, the Stars began their run at the title with victories over three of the nation’s top five teams, Boston College (25-18, 25-15), Messiah (25-22, 25-16) and Ohio Northern (25-23, 25-19), to advance to the championship match. In the championship, Dominican University faced Bethel College of Minnesota and clinched the national title 25-23 and 25-16.
“I am delighted for Coach [Jamie] Walters and the men’s club volleyball team,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Barbara Bolich. “Winning a single championship is an opportunity of a lifetime but to repeat and win back-to-back national titles is a testament to the team’s commitment to success and the coach’s leadership.”
Dominican University right-side hitter Mickey Perillo was named the NIRSA Division II National Tournament Most Valuable Player while Steve Dowjotas was named the Libero of the Tournament. Joining them on the All-Tournament First Team were Dominican’s middle hitters Vytas Norusis and Jason Fox. Outside hitter Ray Van Syckle was named to the All-Tournament Second Team while setter Josh Jennings and outside hitter Evan Bezek earned All-Tournament honorable mention awards.
For the year, the Stars posted a 41-5 overall record and went 21-1 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball Association (MVCA) and 7-0 in the MVCA tournament to capture the MVCA conference championship.
“We had an amazing run,” said Walters. “The fact that we were able to repeat after losing last year’s Most Valuable Player and with just seven guys on our roster is amazing. It shows that championships are won with hard work and determination to make yourself the best you can be.”
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
