Graduate Student Commencement on May 6
Over 230 students will receive master’s degree from Dominican University during commencement exercises on Saturday, May 6 at 3:00 p.m. in Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. Robert S. Martin, former director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, will serve as speaker for the ceremony and will receive an honorary degree from the university.
As the first librarian selected by President George W. Bush to head the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Martin engineered a record level of federal support and oversaw the awarding of more than $899 million in federal grants to American’s museums and libraries.
For over two decades, Martin has built a record of developing creative strategies for enhancing library education. Prior to his position as director of the IMLS, Martin served as professor and interim director in the School of Library and Information Studies at Texas Woman’s University, director and librarian of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and associate dean of Libraries for Special Collections at Louisiana State University. Martin also served as acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001 and 2002.
Martin has also been active in international cultural affairs, representing the United States as a member and head of numerous delegations to UNESCO and to the Organization of American States. He is a member of the US Commission on UNESCO.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs through the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the School of Business, the School of Education and the Graduate School of Social Work. In the 2006 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the eighth consecutive year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
