Book Club Discusses The Peppered Moth
Dominican University’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, May 25 to discuss The Peppered Moth by Margaret Drabble. The book club meets at 7:00 p.m. in Room 003 of the Rebecca Crown Library on the main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The Peppered Moth chronicles the lives of three generations of women from the same family, examining how genes, DNA and environment combine to change or challenge a person. The novel’s protagonist, Bessie Bawtry, is a thinly disguised depiction of Drabble’s own mother and her thwarted ambitions after becoming a wife and mother. Resentful of her situation in life, Bessie takes out her frustration on her husband and children.
The story continues with Bessie’s daughter, Chrissie, who is able to overcome her own unhappy marriage, and Bessie’s granddaughter, journalist Faro Gaulden, who can’t quite make the most of what she has. Drabble creates depth in the story by including asides about anthropological theories, gene research and social migration and how they influence the three women.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
