Relationship Between Science Fiction and Religion
Dominican University will present a panel discussion on Sunday, April 23 on the relationship between science fiction and religion as part of the One Book/Two Villages program being celebrated this spring in Oak Park and River Forest. The discussion will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Eloise Martin Recital Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
The panel will be led by Father Richard Woods, OP, Dominican University professor of theology and chair of the Department of Political Science, Theology and Pastoral Ministry. With Dr. Tim Weldon, chair of philosophy and theology at University of St. Francis, Fr. Woods will discuss how both science fiction and religion probe the origin and end of the universe and illuminate the meaning and value of human existence.
Through examples from literature and film, including stories by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Robert Miller and James Blish as well as films such as the Star Wars and Star Trek series, Fr. Woods and Dr. Weldon will also discuss how both science fiction and religion envision alternative realities and how those concepts sometimes clash.
Fr. Woods is a noted author of fantasy novels and a life member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He has co-authored with renowned writer Anne McCaffrey a book on the mythology and symbolism of dragons, A Diversity of Dragons, 1997, and wrote its sequel, Epiphanius Tighe and the Dragon of East South Water Street, in 2000. He has contributed short stories to a trilogy of anthologies focusing on the Knights Templar (Tales of the Knights Templar, 1995, On Crusade: More Tales of the Knights Templar, 1998, and Crusade of Fire, 2002) and, in addition, has written 13 nonfiction books.
One Book/Two Villages is a cooperative project of the Oak Park Public Library and the River Forest Public Library and features a number of community activities focused on Ray Bradbury’s classic tale of censorship, Fahrenheit 451.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
