Opera Luminary Renée Fleming to Perform at DU

Dominican University is proud to present opera’s premier soprano Renée Fleming at its Annual Trustee Benefit concert on Sunday, March 5 at 3:00 p.m. This concert represents a rare opportunity to experience Ms. Fleming’s extraordinary talent in the intimate confines of the university’s 1,200-seat Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Fleming enjoys widespread devotion among opera aficionados and the general public alike. She inspired Ann Patchett’s award-winning novel Bel Canto and contributed to the soundtrack for the blockbuster movie The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. She has written a well-reviewed book, The Inner Voice: The Making of a Singer and even had an iris named in her honor. Her reputation, however, is based on astonishing vocal gifts and a magnetic stage presence.

Though she is renowned for her appearances in classic operas by Mozart and Strauss, she also devotes her talent to new works such as André Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire and John Corrigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles. While she has released popular recordings of bel canto and Baroque arias, she has also recorded jazz-inspired renditions of songs by John Lennon/Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder.

The concert is just part of a day of festive fundraising events for the university. Guests will compete for more than 100 exciting items at a silent auction following the concert. At a black tie dinner in the evening, the university will bestow the 2006 Bravo Award to James and Ellen O’Connor for their work supporting many of Chicago’s leading cultural institutions, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, Ravinia Festival and Steppenwolf Theatre. Dominican presents the award annually to honor distinguished contributions to the fine arts.

A limited number of concert-only tickets are available for $55 or $75 through the university box office at (708) 488-5000. Tickets for the gala are $350, which includes the concert, cocktail reception, silent auction and dinner. For more information on the gala, contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at (708) 524-6299.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
