DU Presents Inaugural Caritas et Veritas Lecture

Dominican University’s Siena Center will present its inaugural Caritas et Veritas lecture on Thursday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. Sister Arlene Flaherty, OP will present a lecture titled “ Solidarity: The Spirit, the Challenge and Mission of the Dominican Tradition” in the auditorium of the university’s Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Flaherty is the justice and peace promoter of Catholic Relief Services, an international relief and development agency of the US Catholic Church operating in 99 countries around the world. She is also the executive director of the Intercommunity Center for Justice and Peace, a coalition of 42 Roman Catholic Church congregations.

Flaherty will discuss the mission of the 800-year-old Dominican Order, explore the nature of truth-seeking and compassionate living while sharing stories from her work for peace and justice in Jamaica, New York and Iraq.

The admission fee for this lecture is $10. For more information or to make reservations, please contact the Siena Center at (708) 714-9105 or www.siena.dom.edu.

Dominican University established the Siena Center to engage the critical issues of church and society in the light of faith and scholarship. The center was named for St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century laywoman who worked for the reform of the church and justice in the world. Her passionate devotion to the central issues of church and society inspires the work of the center in its schedule of lectures, symposia, workshops, retreats, research and seminars.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
