Men’s Basketball Wins with Up-tempo Play

The Dominican University men’s basketball team, boasting the nation’s 23rd ranked defense in opponents’ field goal percentage and the 33rd ranked defense in points-per-game, is currently riding a two-game Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) winning streak after posting victories over Wisconsin Lutheran, 87-80, and Marian College, 71-68, last week.

On Saturday, the Stars hosted Marian and jumped out to a nine-point lead in the game’s first ten minutes but Marian chipped away at the Stars’ lead and entered the half down just eight points at 42-34. The Stars extended their lead to 13 in the opening minutes of the second half but again Marian came charging back and took its first lead of the game with just over five minutes remaining at 58-57. The Stars reclaimed the lead for good at 62-60 after a three-point play by Mike Haiduc (Chicago, IL). Erin McMillan (Dolton, IL) sealed the game for the Stars at the free-throw line, hitting four free throws in the final minute.

Ivano Clay (Chicago, IL) led four Stars in double-figures with 16 points and also dished out a career-high eight assists. Marlon Cobb (Flossmoor, IL) and Dan Borys (Crown Point, IN) added 12 points apiece while McMillan scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Stars.

Earlier in the week, the Stars knocked off Wisconsin Lutheran College at Dominican’s Igini Sports Forum. Haiduc logged a game-high 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the winning effort. Cobb poured in a season-high 18 points and had five steals for the Stars while Binyamin Jones (Chicago, IL) and Clay added 12 and 11 points respectively.

The pair of victories pushed the Stars’ record to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the LMC. The Stars are currently in third place in the conference with big games against Edgewood and Lakeland Colleges on the road this week.
