Men’s Basketball Drops Back-to-back in LMC
The Dominican University men’s basketball team slipped into fourth place in the Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) after dropping back-to-back games in conference play last week.
Last Tuesday night, the Stars slipped from third place where they have spent most of their first season in the LMC after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches’ poll. On that night, the Stars fell to Edgewood College 73-70 after going up on the Eagles by 19 points early in the second half at the Edgedome.
The Stars led by as many as 17 points in the first half and by 10 points at the break after shooting 54.8% in the first half and 77.8% from behind the three-point line. Sophomores Ivano Clay (Chicago, IL) and Mike Haiduc (Chicago, IL) led the Stars’ firs- half surge, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Stars went on to open a 19-point lead in the first three minutes of the second half as Dominican began a 9-0 run on its first four possessions. Edgewood then began to cut into the Stars’ lead and eventually claimed its first lead of the game at 69-68 with just under two and a half minutes to play. The Eagles then sealed the game at the foul-line, connecting on four free throws in the game’s final 15 seconds.
Haiduc finished with a game-high and season-high 27 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while Clay finished with 16 points after going just 1-for-2 from the field in the second half.
On Saturday, the Stars traveled to Lakeland College to take on the first place Muskies and were handed their worst loss of the season, 77-51.
Haiduc again led the Stars in scoring with 13 points and nine rebounds. Binyamin Jones (Chicago, IL) also scored 11 points for the Stars in the losing effort.
The losses dropped the Stars’ overall record to 11-10 on the year and 6-6 in the LMC. They return to the court on Tuesday when they host Concordia University (WI) for a 7:00 p.m. game.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
