Charles Morris Presents Mazzuchelli Lecture

Dominican University will present Charles R. Morris, author of The Tycoons: How Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould and J. P. Morgan Invented the American Supereconomy, in the annual Mazzuchelli Lecture on Wednesday, November 2. Morris’ lecture, “The Frayed American Safety Net,” will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Eloise Martin Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Building, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Morris, a successful businessman and noted interpreter of American Catholicism, will focus on the current debate over social security reform and discuss social trends and the shifting and conflicting values reflected in social policy over the past several decades.

A former group executive at Chase Manhattan Bank, Morris served for many years as the managing partner of a consulting firm specializing in the financial services and investment banking industries. He is the author of several books, including American Catholic: The Saints and Sinners Who Built America’s Most Powerful Church, and Computer Wars: The Post-IBM World. He has also published numerous opinion pieces in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly and Commonweal.

The Mazzuchelli Lecture is an annual program honoring Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, the Italian missionary who founded the Sinsinawa Dominicans, Dominican University’s founding order, for his commitment to education, the arts and social justice.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs through the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the Institute for Adult Learning. In the 2006 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the eighth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
