DU Presents Lecture on Science and Religion

Dominican University’s Siena Center will present the annual Albertus Magnus Lecture on “Science and Religion in the Pursuit of Truth: Friends or Enemies?” on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest. Addressing the topic will be Father Donald Goergen, OP and Sr. Margaret Schott, OP, a theologian and scientist, respectively.

Fr. Goergen and Sr. Schott will explore the relationship between science and religion, a topic that has been the focus of recent debate between proponents of creationism and evolution. Fr. Goergen and Sr. Schott will address this conflict and discuss the possibility of maintaining a wholistic or synthetic view of the universe.

Fr. Goergen is a Dominican friar of the Central Province and author of several religious books and articles. In addition, he has taught spirituality and Christology at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. His doctoral dissertation focused on renowned paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a Jesuit scientist who saw no conflict between theories of creation and evolution.

Sr. Schott, assistant professor of chemistry at Dominican University, has a doctorate in organic chemistry from Northwestern University and worked as a scientist in biotechnology research for 16 years before becoming an educator. Her research areas have focused on monoclonal antibodies for cancer diagnosis and therapy, automated DNA synthesis, and peptide vaccines for cancer prevention as well as questions at the interface of science and theology.

For more information on this lecture, please call the Siena Center at (708) 714-9105.

Dominican University established the Siena Center to engage the critical issues of church and society in the light of faith and scholarship. The center was named for St. Catherine of Siena, a 14th-century laywoman who worked for the reform of the church and justice in the world. Her devotion to the central issues of church and society inspires the work of the center in its schedule of lectures, symposia, workshops, research and seminars.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
