Book Club Discusses Howards End

Dominican University’s Book Club will meet on Thursday, November 17 to discuss E. M. Forster’s Howards End. The book club meets at 7:00 p.m. in Room 003 of the Rebecca Crown Library on the main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

Howards End follows the intertwined fortunes of the Schlegel sisters, Margaret and Helen, and the Wilcox family over the course of several years. The Schlegels are classic bohemians, intellectuals devoted to the arts and living modestly off their father’s inheritance. The Wilcoxes, however, are unapologetically bourgeois, materialistic and devoted to reason over passion.

Their lives become intertwined when Margaret is bequeathed the Wilcox’s country manor, Howards End, following the untimely demise of Mrs. Wilcox. Ultimately, Margaret grows to appreciate, fall in love and marry the widowed Henry Wilcox.

Set in the early 20th century, Howards End is a brilliant exploration of class, nationality, economic status and their affect on personal relationships.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
