Dominican University falls in 2005 season opener

The Dominican University women’s soccer program fell in its first game under first-year head coach Jeff Halsema. The Stars hosted neighborhood rival Concordia University in the 2005 season opener on Thursday, September 1, and fell to the Cougars 4-0.

Freshmen forwards Jenny Pacheco (Summit, IL) and Mayra Camacho (Summit, IL) fired off 11 of the Stars’ 13 shots in their first collegiate game, while freshman goalkeeper Gwen Geever (Bolingbrook, IL) recorded six saves in her first career contest.

The Stars then traveled to Tri-State University in Indiana for the Siersma Memorial Classic. The Stars battled Rochester College of Michigan in the first round, but fell 4-3 before falling in the consolation championship 4-0 to the tournament’s host, Tri-State University.

In the tournament’s opening round, the Stars fell behind 4-0 before Camacho and Pacheco each netted their first career goals to lift the Stars to a 2-1 lead. Rochester rallied with a pair of goals to take a 3-2 lead before the Stars evened the score at 3-3 on a goal by Katrina Hayes (Kansas City, MO) in the 72 nd minute of play. However, just five minutes later Rochester tallied the game-winning goal.

In the loss to Tri-State, Camacho scored the Stars’ lone goal, while Geever recorded eight saves in the losing effort.

The Stars return to action on Saturday, September 10, as they host Concordia University (IL) at 3:30 p.m. for the pair’s final meeting of the 2005 season.
