Dominican University Stars off to a hot start
The Dominican University men’s soccer team began its quest for a fourth-consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament on Thursday, September 1, as the Stars played the role of an unfriendly host to Concordia University (IL), defeating the Cougars 14-0.It took just four minutes for the Stars to record their first goal of the season, as forward David Niederholtmeyer (Washington, MO) was taken down in the box and scored on the ensuing penalty kick. Matt Kochanowski then erupted for three straight goals for the Stars, recording five goals in his first career collegiate contest.
Nate Hirt (Olathe, KS) tallied two goals in the Stars’ season opener while Sean Gaffney (O’F allon, MO), Andres Delgado (Oak Lawn, IL), John Legler (Overland Park, KS), Dan Humphreys (Geneva, IL) and George Fleps (Roselle, IL) each netted one goal apiece.
The Stars then traveled to Washington, Mo., for a Sunday match-up with Webster University and returned home with a 4-1 victory. Webster got on the board first with a goal in the game’s eleventh minute, but the Stars then rattled off four straight goals to seal the victory.
Plamen Pamukov (Addison, IL) and Jose Miranda (Chicago, IL) got the Stars’ offense going with the game-tying and go-ahead goal, respectively, and then Niederholtmeyer and Gaffney each added their second goals of the season to finish the Stars’ scoring.
The Stars return to action on Wednesday, September 7, as they host North Central College for a 4:00 p.m. game before hosting Concordia University (IL) on Saturday, September 10, for the pair’s final match-up of the 2005 season.
