DU Breaks Ground on New Childhood Education Center

Dominican University will break ground on the new Rose K. Goedert Early Childhood Education Center at 11:45 a.m., Friday, September 30. The new center, to be located at the university’s Priory Campus, 7200 W. Division Street, River Forest, is being made possible by the generous donation of John P. Goedert, in honor of his late wife, Rose.

The Goederts were married in 1940 and raised their family in River Forest, where Jack still resides. Rose’s commitment to the education and well-being of children began in earnest when she discovered that her youngest son, Mike, was deaf. She was determined to provide him with a quality education that concentrated on teaching him how to speak.

The Rose K. Goedert Early Childhood Education Center will provide services for 92 children. In honor of Rose’s commitment to her son, Goedert’s donation will also be used to purchase assistive technology devices to help train teachers planning to work with children with special needs.

The facility will include individual play areas for each of its five classrooms as well as a large playground for all the children. The center will also include observation rooms with one-way mirrors to give teachers-in-training and educational professionals the opportunity to observe activities without distracting children.

“We are pleased that this new facility will strengthen the lab school opportunities for our current and future early childhood teacher candidates. I am confident that Mrs. Goedert would be proud to have her name on this excellent new center,” said Sister Colleen McNicholas, dean of the School of Education.
