GSLIS Publishes Monograph on Cuban Libraries
Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science announces the publication of Aspects of Contemporary Librarianship in Cuba, a monograph containing a collection of articles on various aspects of librarianship in Cuba in the early twenty-first century. The monograph was prompted by the agreement of the Cuban delegation to the joint American Library Association/Canadian Library Association 2003 annual conference to make its papers available for translation and dissemination.Dr. William V. Jackson, Senior Fellow at Dominican’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science and an expert on Latin American librarianship, proposed and planned the monograph as a reprint of World Libraries, volume 13, numbers 1 and 2.
“In recent years, it has been difficult for American librarians to visit Cuba and study first-hand its library system,” explained Jackson. “So we thought it would be useful to bring together a series of articles on contemporary Cuban librarianship, including English translations of some papers given at the joint ALA/CLA annual meeting in Toronto in 2003.”
Articles in the monograph cover topics such as the status of rural Cuban libraries, the training of librarians in Cuba, current reading initiatives, and efforts to preserve Cuban collections.
Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science has had a long-standing interest in international librarianship. The graduate curriculum includes a variety of courses related to this area and digital publishing, including “International Librarianship,” “ Great Libraries and Their Collections,” “Web Design,” and “Internet Publishing.” The School also publishes World Libraries, an online international journal focusing on libraries and socio-economic development. The URL for the journal is http://www.worlib.org/.
Copies of the monograph are available for $20. To order the monograph, send your request to worldlib@dom.edu. For more information about the monograph or the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, please call (708) 524-6845.
