Stars Hit First Road Block of the Season
The Dominican University men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday, September 21 at University of Chicago, 1-0 in overtime.
The Stars battled the Maroons, ranked fourth in the Central Region, to a scoreless tie after 90 minutes of play in regulation. In the game’s 97 th minute of play, the Maroons finished the game with a goal off a throw-in deep in Dominican’s end. Goalkeeper David Rodrigues made seven saves in his first start in goal for the Stars.
The Stars rebounded on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering in Dominican’s Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) opener.
Nick Wisniewski scored a pair of goals in the win for the Stars while Dave Niederholtmeyer added a goal and had a pair of assists.
Wisniewski got the Stars’ offense going in the 12 th minute with his first career collegiate goal as he tapped in a header from Niederholtmeyer. Wisniewski added an insurance goal for the Stars late in the first half as he again tapped in a ball flicked off the head of Niederholtmeyer. Niederholtmeyer then sealed the victory with his eighth goal of the season in the 76 th minute.
The Stars now stand at 7-1-0 and are 1-0-0 in the LMC play and are currently ranked 14 th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They will return to the field on Saturday, October 1, as they host Edgewood College for Homecoming Weekend.
