DU Hosts Lecture Series on Business and Ethics
Dominican University’s School of Business will present this fall a series of lectures on business and ethics by prominent men and women in the business world, including William Daley, chairman of the Midwest Region for JP Morgan Chase & Co. and former US Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton, and Cyrus F. Freidheim, Jr., former chairman of the board and CEO of Chiquita Brands International. All lectures will be held at the university’s main campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
Cyrus Freidheim will kick off the series on Monday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. with a lecture on “ Chiquita Banana: Recovering From the Slip.” Freidheim was asked to take the helm of Chiquita in 2002 as it emerged from bankruptcy, and led the international corporation’s financial turnaround until his retirement in 2004. He will discuss Chiquita’s controversial history and share some of the challenges the corporation faced as it strove to change negative perceptions of its policies on labor rights, discrimination and environmental issues. A proponent of corporate social responsibility and transparency, Freidheim insisted on meeting with advocacy groups such as the Rainforest Coalition during his restructuring of the corporation. The lecture will be held in the Eloise Martin Recital Hall.
Carol Eiffler-Orton, president of Words by CEO, will present a lecture on “Two Steps to Networking Success” on Wednesday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Springer Suite. An entrepreneur for over 23 years, Eiffler-Orton’s diversified business provides personal and corporate communications, small business consulting, and training for academic institutions including Triton College and the College of Lake County. The registration fee for this event is $10; refreshments will be served. To make a reservation, call (708) 524-6810.
William Daley will present a lecture on “Could You Look Your Neighbor in the Eye?” on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium. Daley has had a storied career spanning government and politics, law, banking and corporate business. As Special Counsel to President Clinton in 1993, Daley coordinated the successful campaign to pass the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and, in 2000, he organized the effort to instate Normal Trade Relations with China. Daley will discuss his efforts to make ethical decisions on a range of complicated business and political issues.
Noted author and journalist Charles R. Morris will present “The Frayed American Safety Net: Issues and Interests,” the last lecture in the series, on Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium. Morris is the author of eight books, including American Catholic: The Saints and Sinners Who Built America’s Most Powerful Church, The Tycoons: How Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J.P. Morgan Invented the American Supereconomy, and Money, Greed, and Risk: Why Financial Crises and Crashes Happen. Morris will address trends in social policy, including the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s, and current hot-topics such as the concentration of wealth and the call for social security reforms.
