DU Presents Lecture on Business and Ethics
Dominican University’s School of Business will present a lecture on “Chiquita Banana: Recovering From the Slip” by former Chiquita Brands International CEO Cyrus Freidheim on Monday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. Freidheim’s lecture, which will be held in the Eloise Martin Recital Hall, kicks off a fall series of lectures on business and ethics at the Dominican University, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
Cyrus Freidheim was asked to take the helm of Chiquita in 2002 as it emerged from bankruptcy, and led the international corporation’s financial turnaround until his retirement in 2004. He will discuss Chiquita’s controversial history and share some of the challenges the corporation faced as it strove to change negative perceptions of its policies on labor rights, discrimination and environmental issues. A proponent of corporate social responsibility and transparency, Freidheim insisted on meeting with advocacy groups such as the Rainforest Coalition during his restructuring of the corporation.
Future lectures in this series include President Clinton’s former Special Counsel William M. Daley addressing “Could You Look Your Neighbor in the Eye?” on Tuesday, October 25 and noted author Charles Morris speaking on “The Frayed American Safety Net” on Wednesday, November 2.
Admission to this lecture is free. For more information, please contact the School of Business at (708) 524-6810.
