Stars Looking to Snap Seven-Game Skid
The Dominican University men’s basketball team is in the midst of a season-long seven-game losing streak after a pair of Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) games last week.On Saturday, the Stars faced Eureka College, which the Stars defeated 61-56 at home on January 12 for the team’s last victory. However, the Stars could not earn the regular season sweep of the Red Devils as they fell 67-55, despite 16 points in 17 minutes from Derek Pedersen. Pedersen was the only Stars’ player to reach double-figures in just his second game back after spraining his ankle on January 15.
Ocie Peet grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and scored seven points in the losing effort.
On Wednesday, the Stars fell 92-79 at Benedictine University. The Stars trailed by just five points with 11:54 minutes remaining in the second half before a 10-0 run by the Eagles over the next three minutes sealed the Stars’ fate.
Bernie Talian came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 performance from three. Ivano Clay added 14 points while Binyamin Jones and Kenny Goldthwaite chipped in 12 points apiece in the losing effort.
The pair of losses dropped the Stars to 7-14 on the season and 2-6 in the NIIC with four games remaining in the regular season. The Stars return to action on Wednesday, February 9, as they host Aurora University for a 7:30 p.m. NIIC contest.
