Performing Arts presents Bluegrass Band
Dominican University’s Performing Arts Series presents Nashville-based—by way of Russia—b luegrass band Bering Strait on Saturday, March 19 at 8:00 p.m. in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. Opening for the band will be Chicago favorite Anna Fermin’s Trigger Gospel.
Named after the waterway that divides Russia from America, this bluegrass band does just the opposite—it brings two cultures together. Bering Strait’s seven members were born in Obninsk, Russia and started playing music together as youngsters enrolled in the same music school. Today, the classically trained musicians play country and bluegrass as if they were born and raised in Tennessee.
Making the leap to America in 1998, the band went through a number of record deals, detailed in the documentary The Ballad of Bering Strait, before debuting its first release, the self-titled Bering Strait. The record received a Grammy Award nomination in 2003 for Best Instrumental Track.
The musicians have made a successful journey from Cold War childhoods to the Billboard Top 100 and have been featured on CBS-TV’s 60 Minutes. Their eagerly anticipated second record will appear this summer, building on the buzz generated by their first release. The group thrills audiences with a spellbinding mix of traditional lullabies, ethnic folk songs and newly crafted country pop in a multitude of languages.
Tickets for this performance are $25 and $35. To reserve tickets or to receive further information, please call the Dominican University box office at (708) 524-6942.
