Stars drop back-to-back conference games
Trailing the Concordia University Cougars by 19 points mid-way through the first half, the Dominican University Stars outscored the Cougars 21-18 over the final 10 minutes to narrow the gap to 45-29 at halftime of the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) opener.
The Stars then began the second half with a 9-0 run to close to within seven points of the Cougars in the first four minutes. The Stars then chipped away at the Cougars’ seven-point lead over the next six minutes, finally knotting the score 56-56 on a jumper by freshman Justine Christian at the 10:16 mark.
The Stars then took a brief lead on the ensuing possession after an offensive rebound by Jamie Baird and lay-up by Katie Strickland. However, the Cougars then rattled off six straight points to reclaim a four-point lead that they would never surrender. In fact the Cougars increased their lead to 15 points at 87-72 at the game’s final buzzer.
Offensively, the Stars were paced by Strickland’s 15 points and Baird’s 14. Christian chipped in 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the double-double in the losing effort for the Stars.
The Stars then dropped their second consecutive NIIC game, falling to Benedictine University 72-38 on Saturday. The Stars managed to shoot just 24.5 percent from the field and had 27 turnovers in the loss. Melissa Lounds was the only Stars’ player to score in double-figures with ten points and five rebounds in 31 minutes of playing time.
The pair of losses dropped the Stars to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the NIIC.
