Inaugural Follett Lecture on Open Access
River Forest, IL – Dominican University's Graduate School of Library and
Information Science will present its inaugural C.W. Follett Lecture on Wednesday, February 2 at
6:00 p.m. in the Eloise Martin Recital Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.
Edward J. Valauskas, Follett Chair and associate professor in the Graduate School of Library
and Information Science, will address the topic “On Being Open: The Real Meaning of Open Access,
Open Content and Open Source.” A reception will follow the lecture.
Within the past decade, scholars, computer programmers, authors and editors have been leading
an effort to make research and other creative endeavors available to the public, at no cost,
through the Internet. This effort indicates a clear break from the commoditization of information
over the past century. Actually, much of this “openness” has its roots in the historical
foundations of 17th century scholarly scientific societies and in universities dating to the 13th
and 14th centuries. Valauskas' lecture will provide an historical context for these diverse
activities.
The Follett Chair in Library and Information Science is endowed through a gift of the Follett
Corporation, a leading provider of education solutions, services and products that empower schools,
libraries, students and lifelong learners. The chair links GSLIS more closely to the professional
community through educational and service activities.
Valauskas is the second holder of this prestigious appointment, one of only four such chairs
in the country. Before coming to Dominican this fall, he served as manager of the Library and Plant
Information Office at the Chicago Botanic Garden where he retains the title of curator of rare
books. He is the chief editor, founder and co-publisher of First Monday, an online peer review
journal devoted solely to the Internet, and the founder and principal of Internet Mechanics, a
technology consulting group which provides advice and support on Internet, electronic mail and
Internet tools to corporations, libraries and nonprofit organizations.
Accredited by the American Library Association, Dominican University’s Graduate School of
Library and Information Science has been educating future librarians and information professionals
in the Chicago area since the 1930s. GSLIS offers master' s degrees in library and information
science and in knowledge management.
The Follett Lecture is free and open to the public . For more information, please contact the university at (708) 524 - 6286.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
