Dominican Stars get back in the win column
River Forest, IL — The Dominican University Stars got back in the win column with an 80-75 victory over Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) opponent Aurora University on Saturday.Trailing by as many as nine points in the game's first six minutes, the Stars stormed back to take a three-point lead at halftime, 42-39, and never surrendered the lead during the second half.
Senior Melissa Lounds scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, connecting on three of five field goal attempts in the first half, including two three-point jumpers. All five of the Stars' starters scored in double figures with Justine Christian chipping in 15 while Katie Strickland and Wioleta Koziol added 13 apiece and Jamie Baird scored 12.
The win snapped a losing streak that had reached 12 games earlier in the week as the Stars fell to Eureka College 66-64 on Tuesday evening. In that game, the Stars took a three-point lead into the second half but were outscored by the Red Devils, 34-29, in the second stanza.
Strickland paced the Stars' offense with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Lounds added 12 points and Koziol scored 11 while Christian grabbed 12 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Stars now stand with an overall record of 2-13 and are 1-3 in the NIIC. The Stars will host Clarke College on Tuesday, January 18, for a 5:00 p.m. game and then host Lakeland College on Thursday, January 20, for a 7:00 p.m. game.
